Life for many children and families in Haiti is extremely challenging. Even before the 2010 catastrophic earthquake, the increasing poverty and lack of resources made it very difficult for the Haitian people to be self sufficient.  Together, we can change this vicious cycle and provide opportunities that will improve the lives of children and families in Haiti.

According to statistics 80% of Haiti's population lives below the

international poverty line of $2 a day, and 54% are defined as living in extreme poverty

Surviving on just $1.25. Poverty levels are reflected in a very high infant mortality rate.

Poverty levels are also reflected in literacy statistics.  Just over 60% of Haiti’s population is illiterate.  This is due in large part of the fact that there are not enough public schools to accommodate Haiti’s children.  As a result, most of Haiti’s kids are forced to attend private schools, which charge between $100-$200 a year per student.  For families living in poverty, these fees are out of reach, and their children do not attend school.  Without an education, these kids are often trapped in the same poverty which affects their parents.  Returning children to school is an important step in reducing poverty.

Guiding Light Organization have provided scholarships to children in need of going to school an opportunity to sit in a classroom this school year.

Guiding Light Organization

is also providing Students in need of going to school, which their parents cannot afford to pay for education an opportunity to learn how to read, write and do simple math out of our Community Center in Haiti.
